STL Inspector Guide

Measure an STL and estimate its print weight before you slice.

Reading the report

Size

The size in X, Y and Z is the model's bounding box in millimetres. STL files don't store units; like most slicers, the tool reads them as millimetres. If a model is under 5 mm across, the tool warns you: it was probably exported in inches or metres.

Volume and surface area

Volume (cm³) is the space the mesh encloses. It's exact for a closed mesh. Surface area (cm²) is the total area of every triangle.

Weight

  • 100% solid: volume × 1.24 g/cm³ (PLA).
  • At your infill: about 0.8 mm under the surface is counted as solid walls, and the rest is filled at the infill you enter.

Your slicer's number will differ a little: supports, brims, top and bottom layers and line widths all change the real weight. Use the slicer's weight for final prices.

The hole check

Every edge of a closed (watertight) mesh is shared by exactly two triangles. The check counts edges used by only one triangle (gaps) and by more than two (overlapping parts).

  • No holes found: the volume and weight are reliable.
  • Possible holes: repair the mesh in your slicer or a mesh editor before printing; volume and weight may be off.
  • Skipped: meshes over 500,000 triangles skip the check so the page stays quick.
